چکیده

This article is concerned with the time evolution of the oblique laminar-turbulent bands of transitional plane Couette flow under the influence of turbulent noise. Our study is focused on the amplitude of modulation of turbulence (the bands). In order to guide the numerical study of the flow, we first perform an analytical and numerical analysis of a Stochastic Ginzburg-Landau (GL) equation for a complex order parameter. The modulus of this order parameter models the amplitude of modulation of turbulence. Firstly, we compute the autocorrelation function of said modulus once the band is established. Secondly, we perform a calculation of average and fluctuations around the exponential growth of the order parameter. This type of analysis is similar to the Stochastic Structural Stability Theory (S3T). We then perform numerical simulations of the Navier-Stokes equations in order to confront these predictions with the actual behaviour of the bands. Computation of the autocorrelation function of the modulation of turbulence shows quantitative agreement with the model: in the established band regime, the amplitude of modulation follows an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. In order to test the S3T predictions, we perform quench experiments, sudden decreases of the Reynolds number from uniform turbulence, in which modulation appears. We compute the average evolution of the amplitude of modulation and the fluctuations around it. We find good agreement between numerics and modeling. The average trajectory grows exponentially, at a rate clearly smaller than that of the formation of laminar holes. Meanwhile, the actual time evolution remains in a flaring envelope, centered on the average, and expanding at the same rate. These results provide further validation of the stochastic modeling for the time evolution of the bands for further studies. Besides, they stress on the difference between the oblique band formation and the formation of laminar holes.

Mean Flow of Turbulent - Laminar Patterns in Plane Couette Flow By DWIGHT BARKLEY

A turbulent-laminar banded pattern in plane Couette flow is studied numerically. This pattern is statistically steady, is oriented obliquely to the streamwise direction, and has a very large wavelength relative to the gap. The mean flow, averaged in time and in the homogeneous direction, is analysed. The flow in the quasi-laminar region is not the linear Couette profile, but results from a non-...

Modeling transitional plane Couette flow

The Galerkin method is used to derive a realistic model of plane Couette flow in terms of partial differential equations governing the space-time dependence of the amplitude of a few cross-stream modes. Numerical simulations show that it reproduces the globally sub-critical behavior typical of this flow. In particular, the statistics of turbulent transients at decay from turbulent to laminar fl...

On the dynamics of laminar-turbulent patterns in plane Couette flow

Plane Couette flow presents a regular oblique turbulent-laminar pattern over a wide range of Reynolds numbers R between the globally stable base flow profile at low R < Rg and a uniformly turbulent regime at sufficiently large R > Rt. The numerical simulations that we have performed on a pattern displaying a wavelength modulation show a relaxation of that modulation in agreement with what one w...

Nonequilibrium thermodynamics and the optimal path to turbulence in shear flows.

We determine the initial condition on the laminar-turbulent boundary closest to the laminar state using nonlinear optimization for plane Couette flow. Resorting to the general evolution criterion of nonequilibrium systems we optimize the route to the statistically steady turbulent state, i.e., the state characterized by the largest entropy production. This is the first time information from the...

Laminar and Turbulent Aero Heating Predictions over Blunt Body in Hypersonic Flow

In the present work, an engineering method is developed to predict laminar and turbulent heating-rate solutions for blunt reentry spacecraft at hypersonic conditions. The calculation of aerodynamic heating around blunt bodies requires alternative solution of inviscid flow field around the hypersonic bodies. In this paper, the procedure is of an inverse nature, that is, a shock wave is assumed a...
